Reading

At Newquay Junior Academy we love reading: we know that reading well is the single biggest indicator of a child's future success. Pupils read in a number of ways at the academy, they have a focused whole class guided reading lesson four times a week. Here, they develop fluency strategies and work on their comprehension skills. They work from a class text, which may or may not link to their curriculum topic, and are immersed in a plethora of poetry and non-fiction texts.
One session a week there is an oracy focus, and three sessions where written responses are recorded.

Every class spends a session in the school library each week, where they can choose new reading books, linked to their Accelerated Reader zpd, as well as other books to share with an adult.

Pupils read throughout the curriculum and there is dedicated time where they can read their own book, and engage with book talk with their peers and other adults. Pupils have their class novel read aloud to them, at certain points in the day, by the adults who pride themselves in being teachers who read, and readers who teach.

We have regular author visits, both in person and virtual and a wonderful library which is kept up to date with the latest releases.

At home, listening to your child read every night, and reading to them, is equally important. Sharing this time with your child each day will make a significant difference to, not only their reading, but their success as a learner across the whole curriculum. Ask them about what they are reading at school at the moment!
